The slot machine was first built by Charles Fey in 1898. Originally from Germany, the mechanic moved to San Francisco where he built the 5¢ Liberty Bell slot machine. The slot machine was quickly outlawed and in 1902 was banned from the saloons in Nevada and California.
To keep the slot machines around, the symbols on the slot reels were changed from pictures of playing cards to fruits (cherries, lemons)
and gum package labels. These symbols are still in use today with the exception of the gum package label which has been replaced by
the BAR symbol. |
